After remaining on hold for nearly two years, Indian 3 is back in the spotlight. Lyca Productions has reportedly announced plans to resume work on the project starring Kamal Haasan and directed by Shankar. However, uncertainty over the film’s release strategy appears to be a major concern. Whether it will arrive in theatres or go directly to an OTT platform has become a topic of discussion in Kollywood. Shankar had completed filming both parts before Indian 2 was released, and the second instalment featured scenes that built anticipation for the third part. However, Indian 2 underperformed at the box office after its 2024 release, raising questions about the future of Indian 3.
With a substantial portion of the film already shot, the team is reportedly looking to complete the remaining work and make necessary changes. Period sequences exploring Senapathy’s past and his father’s character are expected to be among the film’s key attractions. The timeline for reshoots and the release date, however, remain unclear. While there is speculation about a possible release during the next Sankranti season, other reports suggest reshoots could take place in March or April. A theatrical release could involve additional costs, while taking a large-scale film directly to OTT presents its own challenges. With Shankar also looking to focus on his upcoming project Velpari, the release of Indian 3 remains a significant challenge for the filmmaker.
