Directed by Karthik Subbaraj, ‘Dorothy’ has been making headlines for its exploration of social issues. Starring Keerthy Suresh in the lead, the crime drama has received critical appreciation while also facing controversy. The inclusion of transgender and LGBTQ themes sparked opposition even before its release. After a scene from the film was leaked, online criticism, protests and calls for a boycott intensified. However, Karthik Subbaraj said the team chose not to be distracted by the negative campaign and remained focused on the positive change the film could bring. He said the intention was to encourage greater respect for transgender people in society.
Karthik Subbaraj also noted that Indian cinema has often portrayed transgender people through comedy and stereotypes, stressing the need to present their real-life experiences and struggles with dignity. He said several viewers were emotionally affected after watching ‘Dorothy’, with some men reportedly expressing regret over the way they had treated transgender people in the past. Set in the 1980s, the film also features Sananth and Rishikanth in key roles. Produced by Guneet Monga Kapoor, Achin Jain and Jyoti Deshpande, the film was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival and received appreciation. It was released in Telugu on October 2.
