The release of the Ramayana trailer sparked widespread discussion on social media, with viewers debating the costumes of key characters, especially Sita, played by Sai Pallavi, and Kaikeyi, portrayed by Lara Dutta. Addressing the criticism, costume designers Rimple and Harpreet said they anticipated such reactions while working on a story that has been interpreted for generations. They explained that their designs were inspired by cultural references, historical art, sculptures and iconic paintings rather than attempting to recreate an unknown historical reality.
The designers stressed that every colour, fabric and visual element was selected with purpose. Harpreet revealed that Kaikeyi’s green costume represents motherhood, while the dark red shades reflect the emotional conflict behind her decisions. They urged audiences to experience the complete film before judging its artistic vision. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama and Sai Pallavi as Sita, with the first installment scheduled for a Diwali release.
