India's political landscape has witnessed the start of another social media battle, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launching a nationwide meme campaign targeting Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi. Through the campaign, the BJP is questioning the timing, purpose, and funding of Rahul Gandhi's frequent foreign visits, flooding social media platforms with memes and posts on the issue.
The coordinated digital campaign, which gained momentum on June 25, has seen active participation from the BJP's national unit, state IT cells, and several party leaders. The campaign portrays Rahul Gandhi as someone who prioritizes overseas trips over political developments in India. Through satirical memes and posts, the BJP is attempting to convey that despite holding the crucial constitutional responsibility of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi has allegedly failed to discharge his duties responsibly.
As part of the campaign, BJP leaders claim that Rahul Gandhi has undertaken at least 54 foreign trips during his tenure as a public representative. They have highlighted his visits to countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Vietnam, as well as several nations across Europe and the Middle East. While acknowledging that some of these visits were official, BJP leaders allege that others were conducted with little public disclosure. They are demanding greater transparency regarding the purpose of these trips and questioning the source of funding for his frequent overseas travel.
