The country is set for a round of by-elections, with voting scheduled for October 6 across four states and the Union Territory of Puducherry. Polling will be held for six seats, including five Assembly constituencies and one Lok Sabha constituency. The seats include Madurantakam and Dharapuram in Tamil Nadu, Nandigram and Rejinagar in West Bengal, Thattanchavady in Puducherry and the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat in Assam. Counting of votes will take place on October 9. The contests are being closely watched as important political tests for the parties in the respective regions.
Tamil Nadu’s Madurantakam and Dharapuram constituencies are witnessing a multi-cornered contest involving TVK, DMK and AIADMK, with TVK chief Vijay’s campaign adding political significance to the polls. In West Bengal, the Nandigram and Rejinagar contests have also generated considerable interest, with major parties intensifying their campaigns. The SIR issue concerning electoral-roll revisions has emerged as an important point of political debate. The results from all six constituencies are expected to offer indications of the relative strength of political parties and the standing of key leaders in the respective regions.
