Voting is the most important and personal right of every citizen of this country. Even the poorest of the poor has an equal right to vote. That right is what gives every citizen a voice and equal value in our democracy.
That is what makes India a democratic country. If people are not allowed to vote freely and fairly, then the very foundation of Indian democracy is at risk.
Today, we are seeing serious questions being raised about the functioning of the Election Commission of India. The Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, is facing serious questions, with reports stating that his fellow Election Commissioners raised objections to 14 orders that were passed without their consent.
The Election Commission is a constitutional institution. Decisions concerning our electoral process cannot be taken in a manner that raises questions about transparency, accountability and collective decision-making.
If such decisions could be taken without the consent of the other Election Commissioners, then the people of India deserve to know: How were these decisions taken? Who authorised them? And who will be held accountable?
This raises a larger and very serious concern—that institutions meant to function independently are increasingly coming under the influence and control of the Modi government and the BJP.
We have already seen concerns being raised about institutions such as the CBI, Income Tax Department and ED. Today, questions are being raised about the Election Commission as well. If this continues, India cannot remain a healthy democracy. If the sanctity of our vote is compromised, the very foundations of our Constitution and democracy will be weakened.
The Congress Party appeals to every citizen of this country to stand up and raise their voice against any attempt to undermine our democratic institutions and the right to vote. The Congress Party is demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and will continue to fight for the people of India under the leadership of Shri Rahul Gandhi ji.Our vote is our voice. Our democracy is our strength. And we will not allow anyone to take that right away from the people of India.
