DMK Backs TVK Resolution on Delimitation

The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Wednesday, August 12, passed a special resolution opposing the Union government’s proposed delimitation bill, with the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government receiving support from the opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). The resolution was moved by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s government and marks a significant political development in the state.

The resolution urges the Centre to retain the existing 543 Lok Sabha seats and maintain the current Lok Sabha-Rajya Sabha seat ratio of 2.2:1. It also calls for implementing the 33% reservation for women in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections based on the existing 543-seat strength. The DMK’s backing is being viewed as a setback for the BJP-led NDA government’s proposed delimitation exercise.
