Former Minister Harish Rao has raised concerns over the potential backwater impact of the Polavaram Project on Bhadrachalam and nearby regions. In a letter addressed to the CEO of the Polavaram Project Authority (PPA), he warned that once the project becomes fully operational, Bhadrachalam could face a constant flood threat. He pointed out that the project's full reservoir level and Bhadrachalam's first flood warning level are both at 45.72 meters, increasing the risk of regular inundation.
Harish Rao also highlighted that several villages and major industries could be affected by the backwater impact. Referring to the severe floods witnessed in 2022, he urged authorities to provide immediate compensation and permanent rehabilitation for affected families. He further demanded the construction of embankments, pumping stations, treatment plants, and the establishment of a dedicated PPA office in Bhadrachalam to monitor and address flood-related issues.
