The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has sought clarification from the Tamil Nadu government regarding the implementation of its order permitting the ceremonial lighting of the lamp at the Deepa Thoon atop Thirupparankundram Hill. The matter came up after a contempt petition alleged that the court’s earlier directions had not been properly implemented. In response, the state government filed an appeal challenging the order.
During the hearing, the judges questioned what was preventing the government from implementing the directive. Observing that India is a democratic nation, the court emphasized the importance of respecting public sentiments and asked the government to explain its difficulties in carrying out the order. The government sought additional time for consultations with senior officials. Accepting the request, the court directed the state to submit its final position on the issue by June 22 and adjourned the hearing.
