A personal video allegedly linked to Tamil Nadu Human Resources Minister D. Sarath Kumar has gone viral on social media, triggering controversy. In the video, the minister appears to crush a white powder-like substance on a mobile screen using an ATM card, with a ₹500 note visible nearby. This led to speculation among netizens, with some alleging drug use and demanding his resignation. Responding to the claims, Sarath Kumar clarified that the video is old and was recorded at Chennai’s Chepauk Stadium during an IPL match. He stated that it was originally shared on his Instagram “close friends” story and has now resurfaced online.
Addressing the drug allegations, the minister released a video along with his wife and young daughter, explaining that the incident occurred two years ago. He said his daughter, who was unwell at the time, refused to take medicine, and upon a doctor’s advice, the tablet was crushed and mixed with liquid for consumption. He asserted that the substance seen in the video was the same medicine and accused critics of spreading misinformation. Despite his clarification, the controversy persists, with opposition voices questioning the visuals and demanding a thorough police investigation. The issue has sparked political debate, especially as the state intensifies its anti-drug campaigns.
