Former Telangana minister and MLA Harish Rao has urged Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy to immediately switch on the Kaleshwaram project’s motors and begin water pumping. In a letter written on behalf of farmers, he said reservoirs including Annapurna, Ranganayaka Sagar, Mallanna Sagar, Kondapochamma Sagar and Narsimha Sagar should be filled to support cultivation across nearly four lakh acres. He said farmers are facing uncertainty during the current monsoon season due to inadequate rainfall and delays in filling project reservoirs.
Harish Rao said Mid Manair Reservoir currently has around 22 TMC of water against its full capacity of 27 TMC, while inflows into the Godavari are also expected due to rains in the upstream areas. He urged the government to start pumping water from Mid Manair and fill the linked reservoirs, tanks and check dams. He also requested that water be supplied from Mid Manair to Lower Manair Dam, which currently has around 6.9 TMC against its 24 TMC capacity, to support the SRSP Stage-II ayacut. He called for immediate action, keeping farmers’ interests above political considerations.
