BCCI Selection Committee chairman Ajit Agarkar’s tenure has come to an end. His contract expired on October 4, and Agarkar was absent from the latest selection committee meeting held in Guwahati. This has led to speculation that he has stepped down from the post. Popular sports website Cricbuzz reported these developments. In Agarkar’s absence, the BCCI is believed to have asked former India spinner Pragyan Ojha, who is a member of the selection committee, to chair the meeting. Ojha’s name is currently emerging strongly as a possible candidate for the next Team India chief selector.
Among the members of the current selection panel, Ojha has the most Test experience. He played 24 Tests for India, while Shiv Sunder Das represented India in 23 Tests, RP Singh in 14, and Ajay Ratra in six Tests.
His seniority is believed to strengthen his chances of becoming chairman. “Anything can happen in the BCCI, but Ojha appears to be an acceptable candidate for everyone,” board sources were quoted as saying.
However, there is still no complete clarity on the process for selecting the next chief selector. It remains to be seen whether Ojha will be given the full-time responsibility or whether the BCCI will appoint someone new. Former wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel has also been mentioned as a possible candidate for the position.
The selection committee is expected to meet this week to finalize the squads for India’s upcoming long series against New Zealand. The tour will include five T20Is, five ODIs and two Tests. The new chief selector will face a major challenge, with the responsibility of preparing the Indian team for the 2027 World Cup. Selecting the right all-rounders and fast bowlers, among other crucial decisions, will be among the key tasks ahead.
