Ajinkya Rahane Reflects on His Toughest Phase

Former India batter Ajinkya Rahane has shared insights into the most challenging phase of his cricket career, recalling that he had to wait nearly two years for his Test debut after entering the national squad in 2011. Speaking on a podcast following his retirement, Rahane revealed that despite being part of the squad during that period, he remained the 12th man while India played around 20 Test matches. Instead of seeking sympathy, he focused on improving his skills, believing that patience and hard work would eventually earn him an opportunity. He also said there was never any hesitation in performing team responsibilities, including carrying drinks for teammates.

Rahane also praised the leadership of Virat Kohli and former head coach Ravi Shastri, saying their partnership played a significant role in revitalising Test cricket in India. He described former captain MS Dhoni as a leader who always kept his doors open for young players seeking guidance, adding that Dhoni valued personal space only when he deliberately closed the door. Rahane emphasised that patience is essential for long-term success in any profession and credited his experiences in Mumbai's competitive cricket culture for shaping his resilient mindset.
