South Africa Test captain Temba Bavuma suffered his first defeat as skipper when his team lost the opening match of the three-Test series against Australia by 214 runs on October 13. The loss ended his unbeaten run as captain, but his remarkable record of 11 wins and one draw in his first 12 Tests remains intact. The achievement includes South Africa’s victory in the ICC World Test Championship final. Bavuma set a record by securing 11 wins in his first 12 Tests as captain, surpassing former England skipper Mike Brearley, who recorded 10 victories in his first 15 Tests between 1977 and 1978. Although Bavuma’s unbeaten streak has now ended, his record-setting start to captaincy remains a significant milestone.
Australia’s batters played a key role in the emphatic victory. Matt Renshaw scored a superb 190 as Australia posted 390 in the first innings. South Africa were bowled out for 284, giving Australia a 106-run lead. The hosts strengthened their position in the second innings by scoring 314 before declaring, setting South Africa a challenging target of 421 runs. South Africa were eventually dismissed for 206, handing Australia a 214-run victory. The result gave Australia an early advantage in the series and marked Bavuma’s first Test defeat as captain, despite his outstanding record in his first 12 matches as skipper.
