

Indian athletes delivered an impressive performance at the U20 World Athletics Championships, with Basant Kumar Meghwal and Shahnawaz Khan creating history. Basant won the silver medal in the high jump, while Shahnawaz secured bronze in the long jump. Their performances made them the first Indian athletes to win medals in these respective events at the U20 World Championships.
Nineteen-year-old Rajasthan athlete Basant Kumar Meghwal cleared a personal best of 2.21 metres to claim silver in the high jump. Interestingly, Algeria’s Younes Ayachi and Britain’s Otis Poole also cleared 2.21 metres. The medals were decided through a countback. Ayachi won gold after clearing the height on his first attempt, Basant took silver after clearing it on his second attempt, while Poole finished with bronze after achieving the mark on his third attempt.
