India’s women’s hockey team created history at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan by defeating defending champions China 1-0 in the final to claim the gold medal. The victory ended India’s 44-year wait for the Asian Games women’s hockey gold. India had last won the title in 1982. The triumph also earned the Indian team direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The thrilling final was played on Friday, October 2, at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium in Japan. Lalremsiami gave India an early lead with a brilliant goal, after which China launched repeated attacks in search of an equaliser. India’s defence stood firm throughout the contest, with veteran goalkeeper Savita Punia producing a crucial penalty-stroke save to deny China. Lalremsiami’s solitary goal ultimately proved decisive as India secured the Asian Games gold and a direct berth at the Los Angeles Olympics.
