PV Sindhu Eyes Historic Sixth World Championship Medal on Home Soil

The BWF World Championships are set to begin in New Delhi on August 17, with two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu once again carrying a major share of India’s expectations. Seeded ninth in the women’s singles draw, Sindhu enters the tournament on the back of a morale-boosting Japan Open triumph, her first BWF World Tour title since 2024. The victory, which included a semifinal win over former Olympic champion Chen Yufei, showed that Sindhu can still challenge the best on the biggest stage.

Sindhu already has five World Championship medals — one gold, two silver and two bronze. Her 2019 triumph made her the first Indian woman to win the World Championships singles title. With another medal, she can move ahead of China’s Zhang Ning for the most women’s singles medals in the tournament’s history. Sindhu’s path begins against Ireland’s Nhat Nguyen, while top names such as An Se-young, Akane Yamaguchi, Wang Zhi Yi and Chen Yufei remain among the major contenders. Playing in front of home fans could work in Sindhu’s favour, but maintaining top-level intensity across several demanding rounds will be her biggest challenge.
