Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy congratulated the Indian women’s hockey team for winning the gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan. India defeated defending champions China 1-0 in the final, with Lalremsiami scoring the decisive goal in the 10th minute. Veteran goalkeeper Savita Punia also produced a crucial penalty-stroke save as India held on to its lead and secured its first Asian Games women’s hockey gold since 1982, ending a 44-year wait. The victory also earned India direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Revanth Reddy described the team’s achievement as highly commendable and praised the players for their determination and fighting spirit. He particularly highlighted Lalremsiami’s goal and Savita Punia’s important save during the final. He said the success of the women’s team would inspire sportspersons across the country. India’s gold medal was part of a strong showing on October 2, when the country added six gold medals and reached 16 gold and 76 total medals, moving to fifth place in the medal table at that stage.
