Sanju Samson believes Tilak Varma’s dismissal was the turning point in India’s 24-run defeat against the West Indies in the fourth T20I at Uppal, Hyderabad. The visitors posted an imposing 247/3 before bowling India out for 223 in 19.3 overs, levelling the five-match series at 2-2. Samson said Tilak’s aggressive batting, alongside Nitish Kumar Reddy, had revived India’s hopes of chasing the target before his dismissal changed the course of the contest. He also stressed that Jasprit Bumrah, who was rested for the match, has no direct replacement, while young bowlers such as Arshdeep Singh and Prince Yadav need more opportunities to develop. Mayank Yadav and Arshdeep conceded 52 runs each in their four-over spells.
Samson praised West Indies captain Shai Hope for his unbeaten 102 off 50 balls, highlighting his controlled batting and sensible shot selection on a pitch that favoured high scores. He also defended India’s opening pair, Ishan Kishan and Abhishek Sharma, saying one disappointing performance should not undermine their ability. Meanwhile, West Indies pacer Keemo Paul, who claimed five wickets, said the team’s strategy of using slower deliveries helped restrict India’s chase. He added that the lack of dew worked in their favour and emphasised the importance of disciplined bowling on batting-friendly pitches. India will now look to bounce back in the series decider in Bengaluru on Saturday.
