India’s bid to host the prestigious Olympic Games for the first time is set to face strong competition. The International Olympic Committee has officially announced the countries in the race to host the 2036 Olympics. Along with India, Qatar, South Africa, South Korea, Germany, Hungary and Türkiye are competing for the hosting rights. India submitted its proposal in 2024, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stated ambition of bringing the Olympics to the country. India is looking at Ahmedabad as the proposed host city for the 2036 Games. The deadline for countries to submit their bids is October 31.
The countries in the race have also been asked to present their Games projects before the Future Host Commission next month. The IOC Executive Board is expected to examine the proposals in March next year, while the host country is likely to be announced in mid-2029. Qatar could pose significant competition, having previously hosted the FIFA World Cup. Germany hosted the Olympics in 1972, while South Korea hosted the Games in 1988. The 2028 Olympics will be held in Los Angeles, followed by Brisbane in 2032.
