Fifteen-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has emerged as one of the most talked-about young talents in Indian cricket. Despite his impressive form and aggressive batting in T20 cricket, head coach Gautam Gambhir has made it clear that breaking into India’s playing XI will not be easy at present. Speaking on JioStar’s ‘Follow the Blues: Gautam Gambhir Unfiltered’ ahead of the five-match T20I series against the West Indies, Gambhir said there was no doubt about Vaibhav’s talent, but players who have consistently performed for the team over a longer period deserved priority.
Gambhir pointed out that bringing Vaibhav into the XI would mean leaving out either Sanju Samson or Abhishek Sharma, something he does not believe would be justified at this stage. He stressed that a few poor performances should not immediately erase the contribution of players who have helped the team succeed. Gambhir also made it clear that outside noise and social media discussions would not influence team selection, with the best combination to win matches remaining the priority. Vaibhav, he said, will have to remain patient and make the most of his opportunity when it arrives.
