Elon Musk has joined US President Donald Trump’s push to replace the term “artificial intelligence” (AI) with “super intelligence” (SI). Musk said SpaceX’s AI unit, SpaceXAI, will be renamed SpaceXSI, although he did not provide further details about the proposed rebranding. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has also adopted the terminology, suggesting that data centres should be described as “superintelligence factories.” The moves come shortly after technology executives and AI industry leaders met Trump at the White House and agreed to voluntary AI safety standards.
Trump has promoted “super intelligence” as a more accurate description of the technology and has directed US government agencies to use the term in official communications. However, the terminology has drawn criticism, with opponents arguing that changing the name does not address concerns over AI safety and public trust. In the technology sector, “superintelligence” generally refers to a hypothetical AI system whose cognitive abilities surpass those of humans across virtually all areas of intellectual activity. The concept remains theoretical, with researchers divided over both its potential benefits and risks. Terms such as artificial superintelligence (ASI), artificial general intelligence (AGI) and personal superintelligence are also used in different contexts, each carrying distinct meanings.
