Microsoft has introduced Microsoft Scout, an always-on artificial intelligence agent designed to automate workplace tasks across Microsoft 365 applications. Unlike traditional chatbots that respond only to user prompts, Scout functions as an AI autopilot, continuously working in the background to understand workflows and take action within organizational policies and permissions. The AI assistant integrates with Microsoft 365 services including Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, and SharePoint, enabling it to access emails, calendars, documents, chats, and contacts to improve productivity.
Scout is powered by a system called Work IQ, which learns user preferences and work patterns over time to anticipate future needs. The AI agent can schedule meetings across time zones, organize focus time, prepare briefing materials, identify workflow bottlenecks, and flag potential risks before they escalate. Microsoft emphasized that Scout operates through a governed identity using Microsoft Entra, ensuring enterprise-grade security and compliance. The company has launched Scout in a private preview for selected customers and organizations participating in its Frontier initiative, marking a significant step toward AI-driven workplace automation.
