After revolutionizing India's telecom sector and securing a dominant market position, Reliance Jio is now setting its sights on the satellite internet business. The company is preparing to provide internet and other telecom services directly from space through a network of around 1,650 satellites. For the ambitious project, Jio is expected to invest approximately ₹1.5 lakh crore ($15 billion). According to reports, the Central Government has already shown a positive inclination toward granting the necessary approvals.
Citing sources within Reliance Industries and the Central Government, the Financial Times reported that the project could significantly strengthen India's digital sovereignty by reducing dependence on foreign satellite communication systems.Experts believe that if Jio successfully launches its satellite internet services, it could emerge as a strong competitor to major global players in the rapidly growing satellite broadband industry.\
The service will rely on satellites placed in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), at altitudes ranging from approximately 400 to 650 kilometers above the Earth's surface. Internet connectivity will be delivered directly through these satellites, requiring users to access the service through compatible devices or specially designed phones.
Satellite internet has the potential to extend telecom and broadband services far beyond cities and villages. It can provide connectivity to remote and hard-to-reach regions, including mountains, forests, hilly terrain, and isolated rural areas where conventional telecom infrastructure is difficult to deploy.Get smarter responses, upload files
