OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has acknowledged that rapidly rising artificial intelligence costs have become a growing concern for businesses adopting AI at scale. Speaking at a recent enterprise event, Altman said many companies began 2026 comfortably managing their AI budgets, but the widespread deployment of autonomous AI agents has dramatically increased token usage and computing expenses. As organizations integrate AI into more operations, infrastructure costs have risen much faster than anticipated.
Altman noted that it has become a common joke among corporate customers that they exhausted their entire AI budgets for 2026 within the first quarter itself. In response, OpenAI is focusing on improving model efficiency and reducing operational costs so customers can derive greater value from AI technologies. The comments highlight the growing challenge facing enterprises as they balance the benefits of advanced AI systems with the financial burden of increasing computational demands.
