

Veteran Tamil filmmaker Bharathiraja, who had been suffering from illness for some time, has passed away, leaving the Indian film industry in deep mourning. Known for redefining rural storytelling in Tamil cinema, he beautifully brought village life and natural emotions to the big screen, earning the title “Director Imayam” from fans and critics alike.
Born on July 17, 1941, in Alinganam village of Theni district, Tamil Nadu, Bharathiraja made his directorial debut with the 1977 film 16 Vayathinile, which became a sensational hit. He introduced several talented actors like Radha, Radhika, Revathi, and Karthik to the industry and delivered timeless classics such as Sigappu Rojakkal, Kizhakke Pogum Rail, Alaigal Oivathillai, Mudhal Mariyadhai, and Karuthamma. He also worked in Telugu and Hindi cinema and won numerous awards, including six National Film Awards, four Filmfare Awards South, and the Padma Shri in 2004 for his contribution to Indian cinema.
