Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has strongly criticised the Indian women's team's early exit from the 2026 Women's T20 World Cup. India failed to qualify for the semi-finals after losing a must-win clash against Australia. Gavaskar, however, said the real turning point came earlier in the tournament when India squandered a strong position against South Africa due to poor fielding, a defeat that ultimately proved costly.
Gavaskar also raised concerns over player fitness, questioning whether India had fielded only fully fit players during the tournament. He said playing an injured player is understandable only if the individual has the ability to single-handedly change the outcome of a match. Otherwise, teams should prioritise fully fit cricketers. He added that players taking the field with visible bandages can create unnecessary concern among fans regarding the team's fitness standards.
