A major political controversy has erupted in West Bengal after authorities froze three bank accounts belonging to the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). The accounts reportedly contain nearly ₹440 crore, and the action has intensified discussions over the party’s ongoing internal conflict. The move followed a complaint filed at the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station by 10 MLAs associated with the faction led by rebel leader Ritnabrata Banerjee.
The complainants alleged that the funds deposited in the party accounts may be linked to irregularities, including alleged cut-money collections, forced recoveries, and misuse of public funds. Acting on the complaint, police directed the HDFC Bank Central Plaza Branch in Kolkata to halt withdrawals from the accounts. The dispute comes amid growing divisions within the party following recent elections. Former party treasurer Arup Biswas had earlier written to the bank seeking a temporary freeze on transactions due to internal disagreements. While TMC leaders have termed the action politically motivated and pledged a legal fight, the rebel faction continues to demand a comprehensive investigation into the party’s finances.
