The Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal is witnessing its biggest internal split in recent years, with a rebel faction claiming majority support within the party's legislative wing. The development has sparked intense political discussions across the state and raised questions about the future of the ruling party.
The rebel group, led by expelled leader Ritabrata Banerjee, has reportedly submitted letters of support from 58 MLAs out of the party's total strength of 80 legislators to the Assembly Speaker. Claiming the required numerical strength, the faction has sought recognition as the official TMC Legislature Party and projected Ritabrata Banerjee as its legislative leader. Due to the support of a significant number of MLAs, the group is expected to avoid disqualification under anti-defection provisions. Despite the rebellion, the dissident legislators have stated that Mamata Banerjee remains their supreme leader and have requested that she continue to guide the party as its principal advisor.
