Shashi Tharoor has responded sharply to comments made by N. Chandrababu Naidu regarding the proposed increase in Lok Sabha seats. Using a salary comparison, Tharoor argued that proportional growth does not necessarily ensure equal outcomes. He explained that if a person earning ₹2 lakh and another earning ₹20,000 both receive a 50% increase, the percentage rise may be identical, but the absolute benefit remains significantly higher for the person already earning more.
Drawing a parallel with parliamentary representation, Tharoor said the concerns of southern states stem from the possibility of widening political disparities after delimitation. He pointed out that if Uttar Pradesh’s representation increases from 80 to 120 seats while Kerala’s rises from 20 to 30, the proportional increase may appear similar, but the overall political influence gap would become much larger. According to Tharoor, this growing imbalance in parliamentary weight is the core concern being raised by several southern state leaders regarding the proposed redistribution of Lok Sabha seats.
