England captain Ben Stokes has announced his retirement from international cricket, revealing that the ongoing third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge will be the final match of his illustrious career. Stokes informed his teammates before the start of Day 4, while the official announcement was made during the afternoon session. Moments after the announcement, he dismissed a New Zealand batter with the very first ball of his over, drawing a standing ovation from the crowd.
Stokes made his international debut in 2011 in white-ball cricket and his Test debut during the 2013 Ashes series. He became England's Test captain in 2022 and played a defining role in England's 2019 ODI World Cup triumph, the 2022 T20 World Cup victory and the iconic Headingley Ashes Test. ECB Chairman Richard Thompson hailed him as one of England's greatest-ever cricketers, praising his leadership, resilience and match-winning performances.
