NASA has released a video showing astronauts playing with the official FIFA World Cup 2026 match ball named “Trionda” aboard the International Space Station. The experiment was conducted in microgravity conditions to study how football dynamics and performance change in space. The video was shared on social media platform X, showcasing astronauts interacting with the ball in zero gravity.
The study aims to understand how the center of mass and balance of the ball affect its movement. Based on a 2019 research study, engineers analyzed how a perfectly balanced football behaves when kicked. NASA stated that such experiments help improve sports engineering and could provide insights to enhance ball design and performance on Earth.
The Trionda ball is the official match ball for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Designed with red, green, and blue colors representing the three nations, it also features national symbols like the maple leaf, eagle, and star. The ball includes advanced connected-ball technology with an embedded sensor chip that sends real time data to assist referees with accurate decisions.
