Mumbai Police have arrested a 39-year-old man from Pune, identified as Fayyaz Premji, for allegedly distributing capsules containing zinc phosphide during a Muharram (Ashura) procession in Byculla. According to investigators, the accused falsely claimed the capsules were pain-relief or immunity supplements. Around 11 people reportedly fell ill after consuming them and were admitted to hospital. Police said all of them are now out of danger.
During the investigation, authorities recovered nearly 14,900 capsules and are examining evidence suggesting the accused had procured 30,000 empty capsules and about 50 kg of zinc phosphide. Police also claimed the accused confessed to planning to target around 15,000 people. However, officials clarified that this allegation is still under investigation and has not been established in court. Investigators are also probing whether others were involved, while no terror links have been officially confirmed.
