NITI Aayog member Abhay Karandikar has stressed the need for India to achieve self-reliance in technology development. He made these remarks in the context of recent restrictions imposed by the United States government, which led to Anthropic blocking access to its advanced AI models for users in other countries.
Reports said that Anthropic’s AI models “Fable 5” and “Mythos 5” were restricted for non-US entities following new export control measures by the Trump administration. The company had recently launched the Fable model, making the restriction a significant development in global AI access.
Karandikar noted that India may lag in local AI infrastructure, including semiconductors and platforms, but emphasized the need for self-sufficiency in advanced technology. He added that India is actively developing AI applications in healthcare, agriculture, and education, while NITI Aayog is working toward AI integration in public services. He also highlighted government support for 12 startups developing foundational AI models.
