The Ebola virus disease outbreak is intensifying in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, raising serious concerns among health authorities. In the northeastern region near Bunia, at the Kigonze refugee camp, more than 30 deaths have been reported since early May. According to the country’s health minister, a total of 933 cases have been recorded nationwide so far, with 245 fatalities. Camp officials noted that under normal conditions, only one to three deaths are reported per month in Kigonze, which houses over 15,000 people. However, the sudden spike in deaths over the past few weeks has triggered widespread alarm.
Health experts warn that the virus is spreading rapidly, with symptoms including headache, fever, and vomiting. Ebola is primarily transmitted through contact with bodily fluids. The situation is further complicated by ongoing conflicts in eastern Congo, where more than 5 million displaced people are living in refugee camps. The rising death toll in Kigonze has raised fears that the virus may have already spread to other camps, heightening the risk of a larger humanitarian crisis.
