Amid the ongoing West Asia crisis and a ceasefire understanding with the United States, Iran has reportedly gained control over the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route, which intelligence officials describe as a more powerful leverage than nuclear capability. According to US intelligence reports cited in American media, Iran now has the ability to shut down the strait at will, potentially disrupting the global economy.
The reports further state that Iran has strengthened its control over Gulf energy infrastructure vulnerabilities and learned to use regional tensions as strategic leverage. The Strait of Hormuz remains central to US-Iran negotiations, with talks reportedly focused on keeping it open. US Vice President JD Vance stated that Iran must not possess nuclear weapons and emphasized keeping the strait open, warning that benefits of the deal depend on Iran’s conduct.
