The women’s singles final at the French Open has been set after a series of surprising and exciting results throughout the tournament. Qualifier Maya Kalinskaya of Poland will face 19-year-old Russian sensation Mirra Andreeva in Saturday’s title clash. Notably, this marks the first time both players have reached a Grand Slam final, adding a fresh and thrilling narrative to the championship match.
In the semifinals held on Thursday, Kalinskaya defeated 25th seed Diana Shnaider of Russia 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 in a tightly contested match, with the first set going into a tense tiebreak. Meanwhile, teenage star Andreeva secured a dominant 6-1, 6-3 victory over Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk. Having lost in the semifinals of the same Grand Slam two years ago, Andreeva has now become the third youngest player in the 21st century to reach the French Open final. She is also the first player born after 2005 to make it to a Major singles final. However, amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, there was no handshake between the players, and Kostyuk declined to pose for photographs with her opponent.
